[1000mp] RE: filter info please

Hello All:

Although I have posted my opinion before regarding the narrow SSB filter
combination for the Mark V, I would again say that I find the Inrad dual 1.8
khz filters a bit too tiring for comfortable listening.

I prefer the Inrad crystal 1.8 khz filter in the 2nd IF, and the 8 pole
Collins 2.0 mechanical filter in the 3rd IF for long term listening. This
pair, coupled with tracking the DSP filters in the 2nd IF, work very well.
Even better fidelity can be achieved on upper sideband with a slight
counterclockwise rotation of the shift control.

I now have the Inrad 4 khz 1st IF (roofing filter mod) installed, and this
has significantly lowered the noise floor in my radio. I have lowered the
IF gain in menu 9-1 from the factory setting of 11, to 9. This has resulted
in not only the improvements in IMD performance, dynamic range improvements,
as detailed on the Sherwood Engineering site, but also a much quieter
receiver and less whiskering from nearby strong stations.

The hiss level with the narrow filters is much improved, and with the
ability not to be desensed by strong nearby stations, I often use no filter
in the 2nd IF, and the 6 khz ceramic filter in the 3rd slot, to listen to
signals which are S 0 in signal strength. There is practically no hiss at
all with this combination..

Before the Inrad roofing mod, a 50 microvolt signal from my generator was
S9, on 10 meters with the preamp on, and in the tuned, rather than flat
setting. After the mod, the same signal became S9 plus 15 db, and I needed
to reduce the IF gain to S8, to achieve parity. I finally have settled on a
setting of 9, as the best signal to noise ratio balance.

Just when I thought the Mark V couldn't get any better, it did.

Happy DXing,

Mike Schatzberg
