Hi again Adam,
Some of the guys on the Icom reflector are acting like teenage boys on prom
night in regard to the IC-7800, so you can make your own assumptions about
their maturity. Some also seem to like to gloat before the game is over and
they've certainly been doing this with the IC-7800. I like to wait until a
product actually exists and can be evaluated before I make any proclamations
about it's quality or performance. I feel the same way about the 7800 as I
did about the 781: Unless a rig can actually make contacts for me, it's not
worth that kind of money. Hopefully, the performance/cost ratio of the 7800
will be better than that of the 781, which was especially mediocre given
it's $7000.00 price in '91.

Given the lead time involved in transceiver R and D, I doubt Icom displaying
the IC-7800 mock-up at Dayton had all that much to do with Vertex's or
Kenwood's decision making processes. Kenwood has supposedly been working on
their new rig for 4 years now and I'm certain the Yaesu/Vertex/Standard
engineers have been working on something for more than a year. The FT-1000
platform is old and needs refreshing and they certainly are aware of that.
It will be interesting to see what Yaesu and Kenwood come up with.

By the way, Kenwood had a leading-edge 100% DSP based transceiver called the
TS-870. Hopefully their next one will be received a little better.

73,
Scott, W9AL
