People on the two coasts of NA had a chance to work VU4. Those in the
central part were in the "shadow" of the aurora zone and had a very small
chance of working (or even hearing) VU4.
Our only chance is to have the next group (if there is a next group)
understand propagation and provide appropriate time windows just for those
of us in the "shadow." Using CW split will also be a huge help. If 10.1
MHz had been used, it would have also helped. It appears that VU does not
have that band, although that is not at all clear.
I heard VU4 a couple of times for 15 to 20 minutes strong enough to copy
a call sign. One day, the period of just being able to hear them stretched
to about an hour. No hope to contact when they are barely R3 and other
areas hear them R5. Noise levels were very low and my antennas are plenty
high.
I might live long enough! Peter I is coming.
