To be honest with you the tallest tower I have had was a 50 foot conto the
side of the house with a rohn bracket and another bras at the peak of the
house. To this I added a hazer. I have moved recently and am only using
about 35 feet ( my elevation here is around 150 feet on a hill above the
surround area) of the tower with the same hazer and pretty much the same set
bracing wise. I always went out and lowered it at the signs of any storms
which was quite handy and it was dynamite for working on the antennas. Don't
really have to do this now. I know it will work with guy wires I just don't
know how right now. Guess Id have to find out from Glenn Martin. As far as
the choke balun goes , I remember seeing them all the time in the ARRL
antenna book and also the antenna compandium. Another thing I have used is
a piece of PVC 5 to 6 inches in diameter and then wrapped about 6-10 turns
of the coax around. This give the maximum effect. It doesn't really take
much just the turns to break up the current traveling on the shield of the
coax. I have used doublet antennas and the G5RV in all it's configurations
using all of the choke baluns I previuosly mentioned. Don't laugh but this
time I did something . At the base of the 160 meter G5RV I wrapped 30 turns
of RG8x around the trunk of a living Magnolia Tree!!! The diameter is 6
inches or so and the thing work great! Now stop laughing . If you don't
believe it I will go out and take a photo of it and send it to you!!!!! I
also have one on the shack end of the coax as well this decouples the whole
feed line as well as cuts down on the noise pick up on the shield of the
coax on lower frequencies. I triccked up the the antenna with a relay so I
could change the antenna from the horizontal polarized antenna on 160 meters
to a low take off angle Vertical T antenna. This thing works realy well and
all I have to do is flip a swith in the shack to change tha antenn from a
local high angle rag chew type of antenna to a low angle Dx getter. On 160
meters I have been able work nearly 100 countries in two DX seasons. All
the low band dxers say the antenna doesn't work . I don;t argue the point
anymore just keep on grabbing that Dx!! Anyway glad to chat with you. Keep
me posted on your progress.
