[1000mp] Mark V Sensitivity and DSP

Not seen any comments on your original input Joe but I thought them very interesting. I have the
1000MP not the MK5 but think the same remarks apply, the DSP noise reduction and various contours
are pretty useless, even more so when the received signal is weak, in fact the most noticeable
effect of using them on a weak signal is to lose it.
I've had the rig 4 years and I quite like it, all the mods are fitted but as you say the only effect
of the DSP is to colour the noise. Prior to the 1000MP I had a Kenwood 940S and I reckon the
receiver was probably much better until it got a little long in the tooth.
Now there are a lot of fine and experienced operators out there who swear by this Yaesu range so
perhaps they know something we don't. I guess it's such a subjective matter that conclusive opinions
are hard to come by but I reckon that in this day and age a good designer could come up with
something better.

Subject: [1000mp] Mark V Sensitivity and DSP

Let me start off by saying I am a big time Yaesu fan! I have always owned at least 4 or 5 pieces of
Yaesu equipment at any given time and I think they make great products.

Ok. I've waited and thought about this for a very long time. I took delivery of my Mark V about one
year ago and found the receiver to be less sensitive than my TS-850. I professionally installed the
INRAD front end mod and it made a world of a difference. The radio was on par, if not slightly
better, at times, (sensitivity) than the TS-850, but not by much. Although there is a noticeable
increase in sensitivity, it still seems the radio does not pull signals out of the noise all too
well. Some signals are heard better on my old FT-101E!

After fooling around with all the front panel buttons, as well as all of the menu items (such as DSP
settings and the infamous 8-9 and 9-0 menus) I have concluded the DSP is marginal at best at
reducing noise. Over the past year I have encountered few occasions where the DSP made a noticeable
difference... 99% of the time is did nothing other than color the noise. Of the time the DSP made a
difference it was in CW, but there were a few in SSB.

I have adjusted every menu item as well as used a number of features simultaneously. You name it, I
most likely did it.

My radio is configured with the INRAD mod and the optional 2.0 Khz - 8.2M SSB IF filter

Perhaps there are some settings I don't have quite right. Help.... as I am contemplating going to
another manufacture (TS-950SDX).

Thanks for your time.
