I have noticed a few things about the with the 8-4 settings.
  On ten meters if I have line noise, or any other kind of band/atmospheric 
noise
I set 8-4 to flat.  The weaker signals seem to be easier to copy, in fact
there are many times that I hear signals with 8-4 flat that I
  could not hear with the8-4 to tuned.
  Now the converse seems to apply on 80/160. I set 8-4
to tuned and it knocks down the noise on those bands.
Try this and let me know what you notice.
