Sounds like you are using shift and width to get as narrow an IF passband as
possible.  That's certainly one way of using them.  To see exactly what you are
doing you can use an audio spectrum analyzer to look at the audio output of the
rig. Spectrogram is a PC sound card based spectrum analyzer that works great for
this purpose and is very easy to use.  With it you can see the pass band of your
filters and see the effects of using the shift and width controls, DSP, etc.

It can be downloaded from http://www.visualizationsoftware.com/gram.html  The
free version will run for 10 minutes.  You can restart it and run for another 10
minutes an unlimited number of times.  It costs $25 to remove the 10 minute
limitation.
