[1000mp] IF Shift/Width

Never having used a receiver with an effective IF shift control before, I
was slow to recognize the value of this feature, particularly for low-band
CW. I accidentally stumbled on this a few weeks ago, and I'm curious if
the procedure I use is accepted practice, or if there is a better way. My
Mark 5 has a 400 Hz Inrad filter in the third IF.

Basically, what I do (on LSB CW) is to turn the shift control clockwise
until I hear a noticeable drop in the high-frequency components of the
audio. Then I turn the width control clockwise until the ambient noise
begins to be significantly reduced. Back to the shift control, which I
tune to peak the desired signal, and finally, back to the width control,
which I advance to the point where it begins to significantly cut down the
strngth of the desired signal, and then back off just a little. Only at
this point do I try EDSP noise reduction or use the bandpass contour.

Am I missing anything?
