Fox hunters, WWII historians, and geocachers,

I'm looking for a URL or bibliographic citation I can use for
the passive sonar/radar location technique known as "quartering".

Googling for the term "quartering" provided too many false hits
regarding housing, torture, equestrianism, ...

To summarize the technique, imagine a fox hunter and a secret station.
The seeker cannot tell the direction of the signal, and can only roughly
approximate signal strength.

On a straight course ( ->->->-> ) the fox hunter passes by the station.

    ->->->->->->->*****###*****-

When the signal fades (*) after peaking (#), the fox hunter turns
perpendicular to prior course, beginning to trace a square of reasonable
size.

                    .-<-<-<-<-<-.
                    |           |
                    v           ^
                    *           |
    ->->->->->->->*****###*****-'
                    *
                    #
                    #   ?
                    #
                    *

Note the two course line where the signal is received, divide the area
into 4 quarters (that give the procedure its name) and identify which
quarter holds the station.

After reducing sensitivity (to make pickup more sensitive), repeating
the procedure successively narrows the search area.

                    .-<-<-<-<-<-.
                    |           |
                    v           ^
                    *           |
    ->->->->->->->*****###*****-'
                    *
                    #
                 .->->*#?
                 ^  #
                 |  *
                 `<-'

TIA,
