The current generation hybrids, my Prius for example, use NiMH
batteries, and have done so since the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius
were first introduced.
You may be thinking of the next generation designs, such as the "plug-in
hybrids", which are being developed with Lithium-based battery
technology. A lot of work is being done to improve the battery
reliability and longevity. It is also important to prevent undesirable
side effects, such as the tendency of Li Polymer batteries to catch fire
or explode if mistreated.
