I sent one FT-980 to Florida for repair and the other
1 with the bad CPU board I put on my work bench and started to trouble
shoot. Here is what I found:

I took the boards out from the top down as the CPU is the 4th board down. I
found some loose interconnects which I fixed and it started working until I
turned it one and off. Then I started from the bottom up and found at least
two connections that were part of the modifications done by K4DPK. I
resoldered those and again it came to life. The power on and off switch
seems to stress the power supply and CPU so I am now leaving it on and
turning on everything excpet the amps with a separate HD switch. I plan on
replacing the power switch soon.

I now notice that the phone jack for headphones does not work. You have to
wiggle the plug to get it to work and sometimes the sound comes out only one
ear. One fellow tells me that his FT-1000 did the same thing and he fixed
it by pinching the inner part of the jack together. I am wondering if its
not better to just replace it although its not east to get to. I have the
speaker patch so might just use the jack in that although you have to
careful as the lead to the speaker/patch causes RF feedback so mine is
inside a shielded ground cable.

Finally, the main dial wobbles some and its tight so its something inside
the 980 shaft. Anyone have a cure. It does not seem to affect stability.
