Thanks for update Paul..
Well, my 1999 late radio, sold in Feb 2000 has a D included on the box
inside the FT1000 "window box". The "D" is an added on stamp, on one side it
is exactly in line with the FT1000 and on the other the D is slightly off
kilter. hi I have another box which is the second box (inner is missing
with the styrofoam inserts) and it too has a "D" rubber stamped on it as an
identifying mark of what's inside. And I know that box came from a 1997
radio.. So, somewhere along the line, some Ds had stamped additions to the
outside box before 2000.
Now, another Yaesu tech just 2 years ago told me that you could NOT tell a
factory D from a plain one (1991-92/3) with the added BPF, TCXO and the 3
added filters since NO 1000 had the "D" engraved on the front panel. He also
said so few updates were made and the original 1000 was same as a later "D"
internally, component-wise. Guess you can not improve on a good radio, and
the pre 1000 R and D was extensive. I was one of dozens of DXers who
contributed my ideas of a perfect radio back in 1988/89 for the Yaesu guys
who designed the radio. They took a lot of contester and DXers ideas in
designing the ergonomics and such. And it has withstood the test of time.
The 1000 was the last attempt of Yaesu to "keep up" with Kenwood and Icom
or get out of the ham business. I feel, like many, that the 1000 kept Yaesu
in ham radio at a critical time.
Any more input on the serial number subject might help us file away some
notes. Pull out those "D" boxes and tell us if YOUR box had a "D" on it and
what was year of manufacture.. Thanks.

ooppsss my mistake. there is no letter "d" in the
serial number on mine. on the serial number patch the
top says FT1000D and the serial number begins with a
"0". so.... in the year 2000, yaesu added the title
"FT1000d" to the serial number patch. all previous
years, there was no indication of "d" other than to
open the rig and see the factory installed filters and
the bpfo. if you see a ft1000D and the serial number
starts with "0" and there is no "ft1000D" indication,
then you have a 1990.
