Years back I had a flaky display in mine as it would jump to some
frequency in the 23 cm band! I took the head loose from the body and
found the ribbon cable between the two had chafed on one of the tabs
that hold the LCD in place. Fortunately, the leads were intact so I
layered some electrical tape on it and the offending tab.
The radio was in daily use up until about two years ago with no more
problems. That might be a place to start looking.
