[Yaesu] FT-51 ill - looking for advice, PLEASE

Unfortunately, it is in standard uhf frequencies stored in tHE UHF memory
side. VFO behaves the same. Other symptoms: one can hear a very low volume
hiss from the speaker when the UHF side is turned on, regardless of volume
or squelch settings. Turn off UHF, the hiss disappears.
The idea that the PLL is "out-of-lock" sounds reasonable, but I wouldn't
know where to begin trying to diagnose such a thing. And I don't really
suspect the memory back-up battery, even though I've never replaced it,
because the memories never disappeared when turning the rig off.
I did a full reset (inadvertantly - and before I had written down all the
memory contents - total bummer) and it still behaves the same way. I also
tried playing with the squelch threshold in the hidden menus, and found an
interesting thing: on VHF, one can change the values and see them change and
be stored during the process. On UHF, it does not store changes, nor show
them while they are being made.
Anybody know of a really good repair service for this HT?
