[Yaesu] Yaesu FT107M question

There is a gentleman on QTH.COM right now selling a black faced Yaesu FT107M. I have never seen one of these before, only the white faced ones.  How did one get a black faced FT107M?  Was it the very last production model?  Or maybe the first production?  Or an option?  ALso, what is the FT107 like as a radio?  I have always been interested in this model.
