[Yaesu] FT897 audio

How about the microphone, Steve ?  I have had mic. elements go bad as they age. The effect is often to make the audio frequency response sound clipped. Have you tried a different mic. just to rule that out ?

  I have recently had reports of clipped transmit audio from my FT897. I have 
  the mic gain set at 20 and the ALC level is at or below the proper
  mark on the meter. Can anyone give me some guidance about where to look 
  next? The antenna SWR is >1.3 to 1 and the rig is properly grounded.
