I've got an 8500 in the same situation, except mine died when being moved
while on my desk. It died as soon I as I picked it up. If you find out
what the cause was, I would certainly appreciate hearing. Right now, I am
evaluating replacement options. I opened the 8500 up and I cannot detect
any components that have let the smoke out.

There is an internal battery that holds the memories, but mine has been
dead for some time. If I left the radio off for more than a day or so, it
would forget it's programming.

I think I know where my manual is. I'll look for it and check on the
reset.
