I'm using the VX-5R hands-free with a headset.  The speaker is separated
from the microphone.  I've heard the VX-5R is an amateur version of
an aviation HT.  For aviation use, sidetone is a common feature, disabled
by default when no headset is plugged in, enabled by default when a
headset is plugged in, and disablable in case feedback does occur.

Try an experiment.  Record your voice on a tape recorder, computer,
note memory, etc. and then listen to the playback.  You normally hear
yourself talk through your bone structure, and adjust accordingly.
Frequently, people with otic congestion shout or otherwise "talk
like they have a cold" because of the distortion.
