  I don't have a 7 but I do have a 5. I haven't burned up my VX5 yet, but I
do know to turn it off before connecting and disconnecting the power.
If it's turned off with the power disconnected, it won't turn back on unless
the power is connected. I charge mine up in my Jeep all the time, I use a cord
that I made for my FT-50 (which fits the VX5 as well). But the factory charger
for the FT50 doesn't fit my VX5, go figure.
