Renee,
Both the TS-940 and the FT-990 are fine radios. The only knock I know of
against either one is that some 940's have developed intermittent
problems due to faulty feed through holes in the printed circuit boards.
Perhaps someone else can shed more light on this and knows if Kenwood
fixed the PCB problem in later radios.
Many owners of the FT-990 believe it to be even better than the FT-1000D
which was Yaesu's top of the line radio for about 12 years.
In general, I don't think you'd go wrong either way.
