[Yaesu] tuning knob sticks on FT-890AT

Over the last couple of weeks or so, the tuning
knob on my FT-890 has been getting a little harder to turn.
It got
progressively harder, and tonight it just locked up. I
looked up the tuning
knob torque adjustment section in the owner's manual and
tried adjusting
the shaft tension spring until it was totally loose but the
shaft still
won't turn. I'm afraid to force it because there might be
something locked
up inside. Has anyone heard of this happening? Is this
something that
happens with Yaesu radios? Is there an easy fix, or is this
going to be a
trip to the repair shop?
