For local noise, you can't beat the idea of taking it out before the
receiver gets it rather than killing it in the receiver.

Look into Active Noise Cancellers like the ANC-4 by Timewave ( the
companie's name has changed, that might be the new name... ) or MFJ.

The idea is you place a noise pickup antenna near the source ( electric
fence/power line/spark plug... ) and the unit SUBTRACTS the noise from your
desired signal which rides through the unit via your antenna.

The idea is great and it works well in practise.
