I personally would NEVER consider an FT-100D.  The failure rate, at
least among has in this part of the country who bought them new, is
absolutely alarming.  The FT-817, by comparison, has been a very solid
performer and rock-steady reliable.  Looking at the FT-857 and FT-897
it's clear they used some of the FT-817 technology in a higher power
rig.  For me, there is no question I'd choose an FT-857 over the FT-100D
if I were in the market for that class of rig.
