[Yaesu] antenna recommendations

Got my VX5R in today, and realized that the stock
antenna is average at best-just like many of them are.
 Tried the Pryme RD9SMA and found that it didn't work
at all.  COuldn't seem to get audio into the repeater
with it, but could receiver the repeater OK.  Not sure
what is going on there??  So, what antenna do you
recommend for the VX5R?  I don't need 6 meter
coverage, and mainly just need something for 2 meters,
around 8 inches long or so.
