[Yaesu] VX5R question

I have a question about the VX5R operation.  I looked
in an on-line copy of the VX5R manual, and it really
wasn't clear.  If I am using the Function button with
a keypad button, do I have to hold the F button in
WHILE pressing the other button?  Or do I press the F
button, release it quickly, and THEN press the other
button?
