Gee, in my rush I didn't talk about why I am a happy FT 817 owner! It
is plenty of receiver for the small box and for use in the field. I
wouldn't try using it at a multi station for Field Day, but it holds its
own under most normal conditions. The CW filter is a must if you do
CW. W4RT has some useful accessories and mods for it, worth looking
at. The Elecraft K2 does many things better, but it is larger, and it
does not offer 6 meters, 2 meters and 70 centimeters (what a gas!)
The SSB audio is quite good, according to reports. The SWR meter
functions well enough that you can use it with an external tuner and
work things out. I use the AM mode to give a 2 watt carrier to the
tuner and tune for low SWR. I have the LDG tuner and its great.
You'll need a small set of CW paddles for CW operation. There are
several on the market that are nicely portable like the 817.
Meet you on the air! I set up in a local park that overlooks the ocean
in Morro Bay, CA.
