Hi Tom, like you, I have no ill feelings about MFJ
products. But I would like to give my experience
with some of there products. 1998 my wife bought
me a Vectronics VC300DPL ant tuner for a X-mas
gift. Looked great upon opening but a little
shake gave me a rattle from inside. of course a
nut and bolt were just laying around inside. Fixed
that myself but the sad part was that on the top
cover was a sticker saying PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA.
Well it lasted about a year and then the SWR meter
went crazy, Fixed myself, a .01 cap rated at 50v
was installed instead of a 1KV part.
Next adventure was when my wife bought me an
Ameritron 811H Amplifier for x-mas 2000.
Well packed from the factory and looked great.
Took off the top cover to remove the protective
covering around the 4 811A's and removed the Green wire
for 10M operation. Pretty simple.
So then I tried it out, power out on all bands
except 15M, Nuts, took the cover back off and
discover the 15M input coil and cap had never been
soldered. Fixed myself instead of sending back and
its been working great since.
I am sure this is off topic but I need to vent
sometimes.
Proud owner of a FT101EE, FT102 and FT920 with
all the trimmings.

Thomas KN4LF Says:
I hold no ill will towards MFJ and have no ulterior motives, but as a
consumer I have the right to disclose experiences with any vendor I do
business with. Everything I've ever purchased from them has had
manufacturing flaws/defects and/or broke soon after purchase and it's allot
of stuff I've purchased. Tuners, power supplies, headphones, dummy loads,
clocks, speakers, keyers. Just my personal experience over a 15 year period.
Yes it took that long to admit to myself that they indeed do make Mighty
Fine Junk. To say that they have a QC problem is an understatement, plus the
electrical components they use are of poor quality.
Recently I bought an Ameritron ARB-704 relay buffer to go between my
FT-840 and LA-1000A and it arrived with a poor paint job and a metal
enclosure that did not come together properly. It works fine so far but I
did have to repaint the metal enclosure.

I agree with Tom's suggestion, though - it is worth a look but don't expect
to find a mess inside except very rarely - guess every company has an
occasional "Monday morning" quality problem!  <:}

Thomas KN4LF Said:
If you buy any MFJ antenna tuner be prepared to pop the cover and inspect
the inside. Loose
nuts and bolts, no solder joints and cold solder joints are the norm.
