Hello Gene...
The tuner in the FT-920, as well as most all other radios with built-in tuners, are NOT designed to match an extreme variety of matching problems. They are
more for "touch up" tuning than anything else. The built in tuners are small in size and cannot handle extreme mis-matches. Building one for all circumstances
would require more space than is available in these units. Frankly, I'm pretty amazed they get them as small as they do. Sometimes you'll see a radio match a
10:1 (for example) very nicely, another time it has trouble with 4:1. The raw SWR number tells us only a small part of the total equation. Sometimes voltages
and currents can rise to very high levels and the radio is wise to cancel the tune request.
The seperate automatic antenna tuners from the likes of LDG, etc. are far more capable of handling these circumstances.
