The issue is that on the newer rigs, one of the pins on the rig has a
voltage on it that supplies power to the mic to drive the active filters.
They make a big difference in audio quality.  On my FT-1000D, the filtering
does not work as the 1000D doesn't have that voltage pin either.  On my
FT-847 though, things do work and I can adjust the filtering.  It makes a
huge difference.

I suppose you could look at the mic schematic and come up with an adapter to
supply a voltage on that pin.  I've never done it as I use my Heil headset
most of the time.
