I have tried my installation and it is very successful.
In fact, having the antenna back on the roof reduces ignition noise also.
Very pleased.
Bascally it is quite the same as Barry, W4WB's installation. A flat aluminum
plate, sandwiched under the roof rack mount, and a trunk-lipComet "prestige"
tilt-down mount.
In case anyone is interested the 2003 Explorer with the ATAS fully extended
tops out at 11 feet 6 inches. Subtract 6 inches for retracted mode. I figure
a 10 foot clearance would allow the whip to take the brunt. Thanks again for
the help, and look for the ATAS-100 controller schematic at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FT817/files/ATAS-100%20controller/ for tips on
using the terrific ATAS-100 antenna with the FT-817.
Thanks
