Thanks all, for enlightening me. Dennis' explanation says it all. I had
just opened up my 1000D to replace a transistor on the AF board and was
afraid I'd caused another problem. Guess not! Thanks again.

| Darrell..
| Your FT-1000 is doing exactly what ANY good receiver with the AGC
| turned off will do! A fully modulated AM signal produces power levels
| about 4 times stronger than the carrier on voice peaks. When the
| amplitude of these peaks reaches the saturation level in the receiver
| they can go no higher and the waveform "flat tops" causing distortion.
| If the carrier itself is strong enough to saturate the receiver then the
| higher signal levels contained in modulation will produce NO further in
| increase in signal for the detector to read. Therefore you'll hear
| almost no modulation other than the crackling caused by the carrier's
| occasional dips to sub-saturation levels during high modulation.. I can
| induce the same effect in any one of the many receivers I have here..
