   Your FT-1000 is doing exactly what ANY good receiver with the AGC
turned off will do!   A fully modulated AM signal produces power levels
about 4 times stronger than the carrier on voice peaks.  When the
amplitude of these peaks reaches the saturation level in the receiver
they can go no higher and the waveform "flat tops" causing distortion.
If the carrier itself is strong enough to saturate the receiver then the
higher signal levels contained in modulation will produce NO further in
increase in signal for the detector to read.  Therefore you'll hear
almost no modulation other than the crackling caused by the carrier's
occasional dips to sub-saturation levels during high modulation..  I can
induce the same effect in any one of the many receivers I have here..
