Hi Joel,
If you want pure performance it's the 1000D hands down... I own a
756PRO and
love it, but, as I found out in the CW Sweepstakes a few weeks ago, the
1000D
will blow it away. The PRO was full of key clicks and pops that was
very
fatiguing on 40 and 20 meters in the crowded bands. The CW notes seemed
harsh
too. I switched to the FT-102 (nearly same receiver architecture as
1000D) and
the signals were clean and pure. Clicks were gone except for those that
were
actually transmitted by the stations, and the 1000D reciever is even
better than
the 102. The PRO created clicks in the reciever. . Even though you
can
narrow the filters in the PRO down to nothing, you can achieve nearly as
good
filtering with the use of shift/width and the APF. But the big
improvement for
me was much improved sound in the headphones. While I don't on a 1000D,
I've
used them quite a bit.
For SSB the difference between the two is not as dramatic in terms
of
perceived performance. The 1000D has a much "richer" sound, and the
performance
of the PRO is just fine for casual SSB... and I LOVE the interface and

flexibility. The extra features work well and are lots of fun. I use
the PRO
more than the Yaesu for those reasons.
With regards to performance, the PROII is reported to be much better
in the CW
department. They've cleaned it up a lot and improved the numbers.
Depending on
your operating style, it might be considered if you want to spend the
big $$ to
get one. But mint condition 1000Ds are available typically for $2,200
to
$2,500.... with the latest software and good alignment. New 1000Ds are

expensive... probably not worth it if you just want to play with one.
But a
good used purchase will allow you to get all your money back. The 1000D
still
has a very strong following among contesters and DXers and will have
good value
for years to come.

Hope this helps..
