Hi Bruce

I have been replacing conventional dial lamps with LEDs for many years.
There are high-brightness, colourless, LEDs of all sizes and shapes these
days to physically replace almost any lamp.

Measure the lamp supply voltage, calculate the appropriate dropping resistor
and install such an LED in its place.  You will have opened that enclosure
for the last time.
