Patrick,
I am not sure if you can homebrew the cable for the faceplate and the rig, 
but you are correct about the mic extension.  I bought a pre-made cable for 
about $1 from a local electronics store.  All you need is RJ-17's on each 
end straight through. An RJ-45 connector (for cat-5) is 8-pin and the RJ-17 
is 6 pin.
