   This is not correct.  The FT-990 is made like a modern PC, a mommy board
and plug in modules.  (No pile of wire!)  The module extender ($100 that
I could never afford) aided repair, but it can be repaired by simply tack
soldering 3 or 4" long pieces of wire to points you want to test, then plug
the board back in.
   Been there and done it.  My FT-990 never broke, I put a modification in
and then a few years later I took it out.  The board connectors are not edge
connectors, they are a pair of very high quality flat pin connectors on each card.
   All non operating adjustments are under of a little door on top of the radio,
which are on the edge of two of the daughter cards. (VOX, Anti-VOX, delays etc.)
