This is regarding the announcement that I heard regarding a congressional NIST proposed budget cut, which would take their radio stations off the air, next year.
I haven't read any official statement about this yet, but heard the news on NPR. I would suggest that anyone interested, do their own research. I am sure that there are many who think that shortwave time, propagation and frequency broadcasts are archaic and should not be funded. If you agree, do nothing and they will disappear. You always have CHU, if you can hear them (pretty useless).
If we asked for the HF stations to be kept on for the sake of nostalgia, we lose. I remember when WWV was in Maryland and WWVH was on Maui, so would I miss them. On the other hand, I rarely use them. I use WWVB clocks, Iternet clocks and GPS clocks.
Remember, in the future (which starts now), the govenment may feel that GPS is getting too expensive for non-military use, and cut features. There are no guarantees.
I once visited WWVH on Kua’i many years ago, and had a private tour. Most engineers there were hams. On site was a Collins S-Line and triband beam, owned by the government. They had assigned government frequencies, just outside of the ham bands, to communicate with Colorado; clever.
Several non-directional transmit antennas were on site, but nothing too big. They are on Department of Defense land. It is probably like a fortress now, but when I was there, I drove up to the front door and rang the doorbell.
