The distance multiplier is also an incentive for the home station owner 
to maximize the capability of their station, whether it be upgraded 
equipment and antennas or implementing new modes of operation (CW, 
FSK441, etc). It's certainly not just the mountain-topper who can take 
advantage of the scoring method.

It would be interesting for contest sponsors to include a "most improved 
score" award as further incentive to not only upgrade systems and 
technique but to encourage continued participation. There may be such an 
award somewhere but if there is I am unaware of it.
