Kent, the vacuum tube kilowatt amps were built in the
early 1970s, using technology from the 50s and 60s.
What's new is running them on an automotive electrical
system.

On two, the amp runs a pair of 4CX250Rs in a push-pull

stripline design. On six, the amp has a pair of
3-500Zs in grounded grid. Both run on a large 110 VAC
power supply that is powered by a 3000-watt inverter.
On voice peaks, the inverter draws up to 300 amps from
two deep cycle marine batteries, recharged by a
special circuit on the truck's heavy-duty alternator.

Obviously, I can't run this continuously for a whole
weekend, but it seemed to work okay during my Texas
roving last weekend (with recharging while I was on
other bands).

I hope to see you tonight on two. Don't expect loud
signals to the south while I'm on the north slope of
Tejon Pass (the Grapevine) just above the valley
floor. But I should be more readable after 9:30, as I
get over the pass toward Valencia and Canyon Country.

73,
Wayne, N6NB
