Hi Gang!

RE: the beacon here in DM09 on 144.288. On its first day it had been =
heard=20
in DM05 and CM98 with good signals but it has a few quirks I need to =
fix.

It was cobbled together out of a old Drake TR22 3W 6 channel FM portable =

and a Ramsey HT amplifier - 1W in =3D 10W out.=20

I removed the Xmtr board from the radio, hardwired the xtal position, =
removed
the keying circuit components from the rcvr board and mounted them on a =
small
perf board, Removed the Ramsey amp from its case and mounted it in the =
same
aluminum chassis as the xmtr board. In a shielded zinc box is mounted =
the W9XT
beacon keyer circuit and associated switches and connectors.

The problems that need to be addressed are:

1) a slight freq chirp as the xmtr first keys up. Minor annoyance at =
best.

2) Key clicks heard up and down several Khz. They diminish to background =
level
as your approach the calling freq. The closer you live to the =
beacon, obviously
the more pronounce this will be. This needs to be addressed quickly.

3) Some very weak spurs near the on-site repeater's input freq causing a =
faint
clicking when the rcvr is open and no signal is present.=20

I plan to remove the unit from the hill midweek to address these issues.

My Question to the other techie types out there are:

A) Has anyone here converted a FM rig to run CW and solved these issues =
before?
There has to be a way to soften the leading edge of the CW pulse =
with out making
     the chirp worse.=20

B) Would a 1/4 wave coaxial trap on the output that's carefully tuned to =
the repeaters=20
input freq help prevent any energy from showing up at the antenna =
and yet allow the
beacon to do its thing? The beacon is xmiting on 144.288 and the rptr =
input is 146.370.

C) I'm open any and all ideas and suggestions to solve these problems.=20

Thanks!
