[WSWSS] Thanks for the memories...

I want to thank the WSWSS gang for making the finale
of my 6,000-mile January VHF trip so memorable. It was
a pleasure to work so many of you from Utah Pass, Utah
(DM37bb).

There were numerous highlights, including working K6IBY and
K7ICW from Utah Pass again 32 years after I first worked them from there. Joe's big 222 MHz signal came rolling in all evening, just as it always has. And Al's signal was loud and clear on five bands--as usual. It was a thrill to work Al on 1296, even though he's running
30 times less power there than on two meters! Then there
was the thrill of hearing so many new signals coming in from
Southern Nevada AND Southern California--400 miles away.
AF6O was so loud that he left me wondering what his signal
will be like when he gets his tower up at his new home in
DM14. Then there were the big signals from guys who always
seem to have big signals, folks like N6EQ, N6RMJ and K6TSK.
Thanks for being there, guys!

The Utah Pass stop also had its disappointments, like not being
able to hear some people who were apparently hearing me well,
and vice versa. It was especially frustrating when people
who were loud in DM37 couldn't hear me on six meters. That has
happened before up there, but it made me think less kindly of
my six meter amp (two 3-500Zs) and rover antenna (a 3-element
Yagi at 30 feet). That setup up worked well enough that I could
hold a frequency and keep people calling throughout the big
six-meter opening on Sunday of VHF SS--on a band loaded with
the northeast's big guns of VHF contesting, guys like WA2FGK,
K1TEO and AA2UK. I was at an overlook on Interstate 80 in
western New Jersey (FN20) when the band opened. I'd never
been on the eastern end of such a big six-meter opening
before, but that's a story for another time and place.

Thanks for making the night at Utah Pass so neat.

73,
Wayne, N6NB
