The following is my opinion on the issue:

There may be some people who have reasons they don't like the ARRL, but
there are far more reasons to support the ARRL than not. There are no
other groups out there that are fighting for Amateur Radio with the
Government. If the ARRL wasn't around, I think that Ham Radio would be a
long lost memory. The Government would have sold all our frequencies to
the commercial interests. I don't agree with a lot of the things that the
ARRL has done in the past. But, I still support the ARRL because overall,
they are the best friends to all amateurs! Who else is going to lobby
Congress on Amateur Radio issues? Who else is going to take companies to
court over radio issues? What other organization is going to stand toe to
toe with the FCC on amateur radio issues?

I love contesting and it is cool to see your call in print but come on, big
deal. QST is about 85% ads anyway. How many of you actually read the
magazine. I consider it a fringe benefit of my membership with the
ARRL. I am sure that the web version of the contest results will be a heck
of a lot nicer. And, I would be willing to bet that we wont have to wait
quite as long for the results to appear on the web versus the
magazine. And, I am not pointing any fingers, but for those of you who
only contest for your ego, now even non-subscribers to QST will be able to
see your scores, all over the world. So what is the big deal if they don't
print your score in the magazine? If they are going to save $100,000 a
year by eliminating the printed contest scores, think about how much more
they can do for radio on the governmental front!

Let's not lose sight of the important role that the ARRL plays in Ham
Radio, especially over something like contest results printed in QST. If
you are a ham and not a member of the ARRL, I would recommend that you go
out and join today. If the ARRL goes away, there will be no future in Ham
Radio!

73,
Neil - N6VHF
