Hi Jim, I agree, but  thanks for the reference.  I don't like mercury 
vapor rectifiers much anyhow,  but when I pulled the mod deck out I 
discovered that the HV had arced across one of the 816 sockets, which 
finalized the decision to go solid state.   Rather than hunt down the 
plug-in replacement I just made my own - modulator HV is 1000 volts, so 
it's not like the full 7 kv rating is needed.   I decided three 1N5408s 
in each leg would be sufficient, and it's back working fine again.

I also knew from when I restored this transmitter that a prior owner had 
sprayed glyptol all around the base of these rectifiers, so this had 
obviously been a problem in the past.   If anyone is contemplating doing 
this, I put a little note together that might be helpful:
