I was first going to reply just to Glenn to say that the 2 ohm shunt was
fine, but then I did some more checking and found something odd.
If I probed the end of the resistor, it measured 2 ohms right on the nose,
but if I probed one of the other 6HF5 cathode pins the reading could be as
high as 5.2 ohms. The tube pins were dirty enough to add quite a lot of
series resistance; cleaning the pins with a Dremel wirebrush fixed the
problem. Since WRL had the foresight to connect the meter to the same pin
as the shunt resistor, this poor connection could not have put excess
current through the meter, but may have had other effects. Just a reminder
not to rely on good mechanical connections in these old radios that have
been sitting around for a while.
Now, back to my quest for an edgewise meter...1 3/4" by 3/4", 1 ma FS.
