AES & I are the same age and I grew up in Wisconsin. 
I bought my first new ham rig, a Hallicrafters FPM-300 HF transceiver from AES in 1975 and I still have it. 
I've always preferred to buy from a more local store and bought most of my ham equipment from AES. 
I also knew a few of the employees so it is unfortunate AES won't be in business and they will lose their jobs.
