[WIham] Working on a Heathkit HW-202

     Hi,

I noticed your interest in the Heath HW-202. Back in the 70’s I had
three of them, 2 using crystals and the other had a crystal substitute gizmo
that sat on the top with knobs to dial in the desired frequency. Of course
I sold them years ago.

I’m sorry to say that I can’t remember much about the crystals except
that I used to buy them from Jan Crystals in Florida for about $5 a pair.
You’d probably want to get some for simplex freqs such as 146.52 since
there’s no tones transmitted as today’s repeaters require.

I looked in my mike junk box and found an HW-202 mike. It’s filthy and
horribly yellowed, but if you want it, give me your address and I’ll pass it
along. I popped the back off and I see the crystal mike element is still
there, so it’s possible that the thing still works. I understand that the 2
connector Heath mike plugs are hard to come by, but I found one in another
junk box, and I could send that as well.

Hey all,

I pulled out a Heathkit HW-202 rockbound (6 sockets rx, 6 tx) radio that I
had been given years ago. It didn't work, but the main problem wasn't in the
radio, it was in the matching power supply, which had a bad solder joint.
Oh, and the radio also has an open in the + power lead.

Anyhow, it receives (static) really good now. I metered the current draw on
receive and it's in spec. Haven't dared trying to key up yet (because I
don't have a mic, and besides, it's a little scary.)

Does anyone have any crystals for simplex freqs collecting dust, that they
care to donate? The book says they are HC-25U type. Is that the size and pin
spacing?

I'm trying to puzzle out what the crystals that are in here were for. You
can select any RX socket and any TX socket and mix/match, but I still don't
understand what the previous owner did here. Part of the problem is that
the rocks are partly marked for the ultimate frequency they are meant for,
and partly marked for their actual frequency. For example, the transmit
crystals are all 6.1-something MHz, which you multiply by 24 to get the
operating frequency. The Rx rocks are all 45.2 to 45.6 MHz, and you add 10.7
MHz and multiply by 3. Or something. Not sure I have that right.

But trying to puzzle out if I can even transmit and receive with what I have
is confusing.

Rx1 146.940 Tx1 146.940

Rx2 empty Tx2 146.460, I think?

Rx3 146.760 Tx3 146.760

Rx4 empty Tx4 empty

Rx5 unknown? Tx5 147.456

Rx6 empty Tx6 empty

So Rx1 and Tx1 are the output of a repeater in Madison, but the input should
be 146.340?? There doesn't seem to be a way to transmit on that F.

Then I find that Rx3 and Tx3 seem to be another Madison area output, but
shouldn't the input be 146.160? No crystal for that here either.

The crystal in Rx5 isn't marked with anything I can make out. It says CTS
Knights, CH-5T, A20M.

Is "CH-5T" a channelized designation for some simplex frequency?

Tx5 seems to be some oddball simplex frequency.

The other problem I have is that I don't have a mic for it. I have the top
of a D-104 (no stand or PTT) and assorted CB mics laying around, would one
of those work?
