Subject: SKYWARN: May 9th Is Weather Radio Day In Wisconsin.
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed May 9th as NOAA Weather Radio
All Hazards Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
This campaign is sponsored by Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) and the five
NWS offices that service Wisconsin. It encourages Badger state residents to own a NOAA
All Hazards Weather Radio device for 24-7-365 weather forecasts, warnings, and other
non-emergency information (9-1-1 outage, nuclear power, hazardous materials, etc.)
There are 37 stations broadcasting weather in Wisconsin and 1,013 stations nationwide.
Weather radios come in many sizes, with a variety of functions and prices. They can be purchased at many electronic stores. Most weather radio receivers are either battery-
operated portables or AC-powered desktop models with battery backup. The portable weather radios are ideal for outdoor activities such as camping and boating.
Weather radios equipped with Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) technology
allow users to program their radios with FIPS codes to alarm them only for hazardous
conditions that affect their county.
