CHIRP - A First Look
By David Lane
If you own an ICOM D-STAR radio, you know how hard it is to program
through the faceplate. And if you are a Linux user, you know that your
options are either use the faceplate or borrow a Windows machine (or
fire up a VM) and plunk down $60 for the software and cable to program
them with. Until now that is. Enter CHIRP.

Have you ever had that question, the one that you just know someone else
has solved, but you cannot figure out the right words to put into the
query so that Google will spit back the right answer? Or worse, you
just know deep down inside that someone has not only wrestled with the
problem, but solved it and they just never got around to writing up the
solution and posting it somewhere for everyone to see?
From the very first issue of Linux Journal (March 1994): Linux and Hams
By Phil Hughes
A trip down memory lane:
A couple of weeks ago I posted the following to the Usenet newsgroup
comp.os.linux.misc. I am the editor of Linux Journal,
a paper magazine that will be covering the Linux scene. In my
correspondence with people about writing articles for LJ I have seen an amazing number of ham calls. Being a ham myself (WA6SWR)
I was just wondering how many of “us” are.
Ask KG4GIY
By Carlie Fairchild
We're launching a new column on LinuxJournal.com entitled Ask KG4GIY, and it's likely to be exactly what you might expect. You ask questions, and Mr. David Lane himself will give you answers! We'll select 4 or 5 questions each time for David to respond to, and will make sure to feature his answers here in the LJ Hamshack newsletter (as well as online and possibly for inclusion in to the print magazine). I suspect we'll all end up having a bit of fun with this... so SEND US YOUR QUESTIONS! We'll send a batch of Linux ham stickers to everyone whose questions we chose to run.
