Subject: SKYWARN: 1" Hail Standard Goes Nationwide

Since April of 2009 much of the upper Midwest
used 1 inch (quarter-size) hail stones as the
minimum size to trigger a severe thunderstorm
warning. Beginning January 5, 2010, that value
becomes nationwide. The wind gust criteria (58 MPH) remains the same.

The change is based on research data indicating significant damage does not occur until hail
size reaches 1 inch diameter and by requests from the media and emergency
management.
This size also allows storms spotters to concentrate on the more
significant storms.

There are short PDF, Powerpoint, and Flash versions
w/audio at: http://www.weather.gov/oneinchhail

Happy New Year!
