Many years ago I was the chief engineer of a Milwaukee area AM station
and received a similar ham complain. After running equipment
measurements on the transmitter I found no problems. I then ran field
strength tests at all my monitoring points. This included harmonics in
the hams bands. Again I found no problems.
I then went to the ham's house and did more measurements on his
property. (He was only 3-4 miles from my 5 kilowatt transmitter and was
receiving a strong signal.) Again no problems and no detectable readings
on my meter.
After notifying him of my findings he started experimenting and found a
bad cable on his antenna system. After his repairs the RFI was gone.
The station could be having a problem and putting out spurs. Because
many AM transmitters are unattended or remotely controlled they many not
be aware of a problem. Using an attenuator as N6NKO suggested is a good
starting point.
Doing a full visual and then hands-on inspection of your antenna system
would be the next step.
